This blog post in no way tries to demean the Indian male but just trying to look at their mindset from a different perspective. You should remember that a common Indian is not living in metros and working in a call center or some IT firm. Those people form less that 0.5% of the total Indian male. The average Indian is living in some small town or village. His choice of entertainment is limited to Bollywood films and Sports interest is limited to cricket. The following are some more specialties of the Indian male that makes him a bit different from the global counterparts.
Religious influence
Religion plays too much powerful role in the life of a common Indian. His whole life seems to be a series of some religion ritual or the other. There are religions rituals for right from the birth to the youth and then death. To some outsider it may seem strange how much spiritual Indians are. But don't make a mistake. In India religious rituals have nothing to do with spirituality or sense of morality. Indian is among the most corrupt countries (according to surveys and studies held globally). May be it is mistake to equate rituals to spirituality or even enlightenment.
One reason for excessive and obsessive rituals can be traced to the influence of Brahmins , the highest class in a curious case of a class system called casteism , where people are born with a class low or high and can not change their status. It is understandable that religious rituals are propagated by those Brahmins to help them have undue influence on people's lives and earn money without working hard.
Superstition
An average Indian believes in all sorts of superstitions. It is due to both high rate of illiteracy and lack of awareness , besides people's natural fear and insecurity. Superstition is prevalent in all countries and cultures but in India it has more influence. You should not be surprised to find hair cutting saloons closed on Tuesdays even in the capital New Delhi as people avoid shaving and hair cutting on that day. If you try to a proper study then you will find more than a thousand of superstitions in India actively practiced by millions of people. It is interesting to know that most of these are spread by vested interests who try to make money by promising to help people. Astrology and palmistry are a multi-million dollar business in the country. Don't be surprised to read news of some child killed or some animal sacrificed to appease some imaginary power.
Superstition is fully institutionalized in the Indian society. Even most well-educated Indians fell to it due to upbringing. It is very common to get a SMS or email with instruction to forward it to tens of people , with a warning of some bad thing if not done so.
Mother-attachment
A mother is a very important part of the family and society in any country or culture. However , what differentiates the Indian male is that he is attached to the apron strings of his mother forever his life. Mother is a highly respected entity in the Indian society. Kindly note that a mother as an entity is different from the identity of a woman in India as the society treats women badly in practical life , all fake verbal utterances notwithstanding.
Normally parents make decisions on all major issues of the life of a common Indian man , right from his marriage to his job choices. Men normally keep following Advice of their mothers even after their marriage. It creates a tussle between his wife and his mother. It is natural for a woman to wish to carry influence in his husband's life. On the other hand the mother does not want to lose control of her son. It is interesting that this struggle between mother and wife makes for blockbuster TV shows in India.
Casteism
It is a kind of institutionalized racism. It is a class system where a person is born in a certain class , low or high , and is destined to live in his class without any choice to change it , unlike in the case of a religion. This whole system has been propagated for thousands of years by the self-appointed highest class of people called Brahmans. Low caste of people have been suppressed in India for thousands of years. Thankfully , after the independence of the country they have seen better days and have started to assert themselves. Though , casteism is still very much part of the Indian male psyche. It still plays its role in marriage alliances and also decision to vote for someone in parliamentary elections in many parts of India.
Frustration
The common Indian male is sexually frustrated. Sex is still considered a taboo subject in India. The men still do not find it comfortable to discuss the issue. But the huge and fast growing population of the country tells a different story. In India sex before marriage is not approved of by its conservative society. It results in frustration and so many incidences of eave teasing and rape , mostly unreported to the police.
In this situation , marriage is considered by the men as a license to sex. It also explains why Indian people are obsessed about the subject of marriage. For a common man in the country his marriage is perhaps the biggest event of his life. Most of them end up spending most of the savings of their life on this celebration. Indians put too much of faith on the institution of marriage and divorce is still considered by people as a very unfortunate event in one's life.
